Chemistry Project
An addition to Die Stigting vir Bemagtiging deur Afrikaans (SBA)’s investment in education since 2017 includes a focus on literacy within the sphere of science development.
The Chemistry project was an initiative to develop and promote science as a subject through exposure to the laboratory environment for teachers and learners.
Traveling workshops specifically for primary school teachers were initially offered in collaboration with SUNCOI (Stellenbosch University’s Chemistry Outreach Initiative). A special manual for practical experiments as well as a complete science kit was distributed at the workshops.
High school students were given the opportunity to get a taste of what to expect in this field of study at a day-long laboratory session at the University of Stellenbosch and the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU), respectively.
The workshop was focused on the grade 12 curriculum. Due to a lack of laboratory facilities at certain schools, this experience was invaluable to the learners.
9 Episodes: additional teaching resource
Videos of the primary school workshop’s practical experiments were recorded in 2021 and are available as an additional resource for educators and learners. The presenter is the late Dr. Rehana Malgas-Enus from SUNCOI who facilitated and presented the SBA chemistry workshops.
